Colleen Hoover began her writing journey in November 2011. Her debut novel “Slammed” was all behind her success. She wrote this novel without any plan of publication. Just vibing in her own world and inspired by an Avett Brothers’ song, she self-published “Slammed” in January 2012. This novel got some coverage, which motivated Colleen to write a sequel to Slammed. She then wrote “Point of Retreat” in February 2012. Both books gained fame after receiving great reviews. The turn was when it was included in the New York Times Best Seller list. Atria Books republished them later that year. This was the time when Colleen Hoover turned the tires of her life towards a writing career.
In addition to her solo works, Colleen collaborated with author Tarryn Fisher in her series “Never Never.” In 2022, she again self-published a novel, “Hopeless.” Hopeless achieved the title of being the only self-published NY Times Best Seller. Several other successful novels, including “Maybe Someday” and “It Ends with Us,” became famous due to their unique themes of domestic violence. Colleen has herself witnessed violence, so every aspect felt real and unimaginable.
Colleen was now famous, she was earning great, and she had a family with her. But, when her romantic novel “It Ends with Us” was released in 2021, the records were broken. Colleen Hoover’s popularity got a boost. Billions of views from the BookTok community on TikTok and millions of copies sold. “It Ends with Us” became #1 on The New York Times Best Sellers list in January 2022. In 2023, the book had a movie adaptation. This was not the finale. Her success continued with the release of “It Starts with Us,” a sequel to “It Ends with Us.” “It Starts With Us” became the most preordered book ever.
Until October 2022, she had sold over 20 million books. Colleen was recognized as one of the top-selling novelists in the United States. Despite her success, Colleen Hoover’s work has faced criticism for potentially normalizing abuse, which I think, to some extent, is true. The journey has not ended. The publisher Simon & Schuster UK has demanded two standalone novels by Hoover for publication in 2024 and 2026.
