Fourth Wing:

The first book steps into a tough world where dragon riders train. Violet, a 20-year-old female, was supposed to study books. But her mom, who’s the boss, tells her to become a dragon rider. What’s the problem? Violet’s small and fragile, and dragons usually don’t bond with weak humans—they burn them instead. With not many dragons to bond with and lots of competition, Violet’s in danger. Some want her dead to better their own chances, and others because of who her mom is. Xaden, the toughest wingleader, is one of those who might want her gone.

Violet has to be really smart to survive. Meanwhile, outside, the war is getting worse, the kingdom’s protections are failing, and people are dying. And Violet thinks the leaders are hiding something big.

At Basgiath War College, everyone has their own plans. It’s a tough place to be—either you graduate or you don’t make it out alive.

Iron Flame:

In the first year at Basgiath War College, some people die. In the second year, others lose their kindness and goodness. Violet Sorrengail thought she would die in her first year at the college. Everyone did. But the first year was just the beginning. They faced tough tests to find out who was strong enough and who wasn’t.

Now, the real training starts. Violet worries about how she’ll manage. It’s not just hard and cruel; it’s meant to push them to their limits. The new vice commandant is especially tough on Violet. He wants to show her she’s powerless unless she gives up the person she loves.

Violet may be weaker physically, but she’s smart and determined. She’s learned from Basgiath that dragon riders can make their own rules.

Overview of series:

Fourth Wing Series, or The Empyrean Series, is a fantasy romance series written by Rebecca Yarros. It is a popular series with millions of readers. The story is set in a world where dragon riders are the elite warriors, and they are trained for war. Young cadets of a place called Navarre are getting ready to become the next dragon rider.

The story starts with a young woman, Violet Sorrengail, who wasn’t supposed to be part of this competition. She is commanded by her tough mother to be a part of this training. Then we see dragons, fierce and deadly wars, and lethal cadets trying to kill each other for success.

What’s special about this series is that all the books are action-packed from start to finish. Every character, even the supporting characters, was built strong. A big question that arises in most of you is whether this book is different from ACOTAR because there are actual humans in it. Yep, it can’t be denied that some aspects match, but the vibe is totally different.

In fantasy series, the first book always takes some time to settle. The world has to be built, the scenes are to be drawn, and the base of the story is established. The first book, “Fourth Wing,” was good enough, but the second part exceeded my expectations. Because there was a flow in the story, no world-building, everything was full of action and fun from the first page.

Genre and Age Rating:

The trope includes enemy-to-lovers and family relationships. The series nearly follows a love triangle. When it comes to the age rating, this series will be fun for teens and much better for ages more than 17. If someone is comfortable with adult content, a 14-year-old can also go on with it.

Characters Analysis:

For a series you are to go on with, it is important to know the characters with whom you are going to spend time. The main characters are:

VIOLET SORRENGAIL:

Violet may seem fragile because of her chronic illness and weak joints, but she’s actually very strong and relatable. She faces challenges in the rider’s quadrant with bravery, using her smarts to overcome her fears. Even when others tease her or call her weak, she doesn’t let it get to her. She works hard to improve her skills, especially with daggers, showing her determination to get better.

XADEN RIORSON:

Xaden is mysterious and a bit intimidating at first, but he’s actually kind and caring, especially towards Violet. He’s the leader of the Fourth Wing and commands respect because of his intelligence and power. He has depth in his character. His shadow powers and scar add to his glamour. Overall, he’s a fascinating character who keeps you wanting to know more about him.

The Main Dragons:

TAIRN:

Tairn is a grumpy and sarcastic dragon, but he’s also strong and loyal to Violet. He likes to make witty comments and often jokes about Violet’s feelings for Xaden. If he were a person, he’d probably be grumpy and possessive, but deep down, he cares a lot.

Andarna:

Andarna is a young golden dragon who is full of optimism and innocence. Even though she’s only two years old, she has impressive powers. She’s bonded with Violet, which shows a special connection between them.

My Thoughts:

What I liked:

Reading this exciting series, I can guarantee you there are a lot of great things that you’ll like. The story is interesting and kept me hooked because of the thrill and curiosity for what happens next. Even though the chapters are long, it doesn’t get boring. Specifically the second book. The first book took some time to set the plot, but the second book was fun from the first page.

The best part is how fast the story moves. You get so into it that you don’t even think about how many pages are left in each chapter. The action scenes, like the fights in the academy, are really intense. The sudden deaths make your heart race with excitement, but in a good way. Some parts are so thrilling they make you forget to breathe for a moment. Can’t reveal them here; it will spoil your read.

And let’s talk about romance! It’s just perfect. There’s drama, passion, and funny conversations that make it hard to put the book down. Romantic kisses and deep hugs make the reader seductive for a while. The author describes everything so well that it feels like you’re right there in the story. This is all because of the detailed world-building. You can imagine the scenes like you’re watching a movie.

My friends even think this book could be turned into a cool movie. Everyone in my reading circle loved the characters due to their depth. The main ones are cool, as are the side characters. They have an important part in the plot progression. That doesn’t always happen in books, you know? Overall, it’s worth the hype.

What I didn’t like:

First, I was confused about how the characters changed in the story. There were many, I mean too many new characters. Sometimes, the main ones didn’t stand out enough. The story moved very fast. I like fast-paced stories, and mostly, they are the best, but many scenes are slow, such as the thrills.

And also the romance, the romance was few 🙁 This is an adult series; it should have adult things in it. Joke aside, the romance was good, but more romance would be better. Even though the main characters were in a relationship, there weren’t many sweet or intimate moments between them.

Another problem was that the main characters needed to talk more. If they had communicated better, a lot of their problems could have been solved. It felt a bit lazy.

Final Words:

Even though the series had fewer problems, it’s important to know that different people like different things. This was my perspective, and overall, I enjoyed it. To conclude, more than 1 million 5-star reviews are enough to clarify the hype and quality of this series.

Ending with my favorite quote from Fourth Wing:

“The right way isn’t the only way.”
