Let’s hop to the romantic journey:
Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover Overview:

Genre:
The targeted genre of the novel “Ugly Love” is a contemporary romance with a crust of fiction. The main characters first became friends with benefits and then just fell in real love. The storyline follows a neighbor-to-lover relationship.
Besides healthy relationships and love problems, the book is spicy. Obviously, you know what I mean by “spicy”. There are many adult scenes, definitely high-level, but not suitable for the young ones.
Age Recommendation:
The book contains explicit contents and is recommended for matures. There are many physical scenes that are not suitable for teens and young ones.
The best age for reading “Ugly Love” is 18+.
The younger ones will not get the real texture, and it is also not appropriate for them. So, make sure you can handle the content.
Plot Summary:
The story begins with Tate, a 23-year-old girl who graduated from college. She is a graduated nurse, but she has to go back to school for her Masters in Nursing. She shifts to his brother’s apartment in San Francisco. Corbin, her brother, is a pilot, and Tate’s going to live with him for a long time. She is really busy getting settled, managing a job, and arranging her stuff.
On her first day in Corbin’s apartment, she sees a drunk guy passing by the door. She calls her brother for help, but he is flying away. He said that he would call Miles, his neighbor, to see what was going on. Miles is the drunk guy. HUHH! Miles fell down. Tate dragged him and put him on the couch. He keeps on saying: “I’m sorry Rachel, I’m sorry Rachel” (Rachel is her first love) and crying unconsciously; there’s a big mess of things. The next morning, he woke up and started screaming where is my phone, Tate was angry, saying, “Thank me”. They are just like fighting and didn’t start well. The future lovers are enemies now.
They – hate each other in the beginning, but they cannot deny the attraction between them. Things get confusing for them, and Miles says that they cannot get deep into love or anything like this; rather, he offers a physical relationship of being friends. Tate also has no time for relationships as she is busy with her studies and work. They agreed to this arrangement, but here, Miles has got two rules: you can never ask about my past, and you can never expect a future. Tate, without thinking, checked and marked it.
Here, we can guess that something happened before in his life. Now, it’s time for flashbacks (I love these kinds of parts; they are just… too exciting). There comes Rachel, Miles’s first love, a high school romance with deep love that Miles can’t forget. He was thoroughly into her, but things changed, and the relationship ended in chaos.
Tate and Miles, more physically into each other, started developing feelings. Miles is so charming and the most loveable guy. He denies Tate coming into his life as he has some fears of loss and a tragic ending.
Between all this, it will make everyone feel happy, sometimes sad, some cries, some laughs, all tied up with you till the end. How does Hoover do this every time?
Just being in a physical relationship for a long time is just too difficult being a human or someone with a heart. When both bodies are attractive, and it seems that they are made for each other, this isn’t easy. Miles wanted this relationship, but he couldn’t forget her ex. Tate also wants to get into the love life, but she is not allowed. Things get complicated.
Time passes, and feelings build up the new Miles. Both break the rules and join each other with great pleasures on their minds. I’m leaving the spoilers for you. I can’t spoil your excitement because if someone does the same with me, I won’t forget him.
Hope you will enjoy the book like most of my mates did.

My Review:
These are my personal opinions based on the book’s case study.
First of all, let me appreciate the author’s choice to add the story from Miles’s past and connect it together with the present. This shows her creative and engaging writing technique. I have read Verity and It Ends With Us; how does Colleen Hoover build these kinds of diversity in characters and the plots. Every time, it’s a new story, a new vibe with a new feeling.
Miles was really a complex character, but when you get to his past and connect it with his present, you are already in the depth of Miles’s soul. By understanding the characters’ motivations, we can imagine their past and the reasons behind their actions. The depth of the characters, knowing their complexity and realistic portrayal, adds authenticity to the story. The characters, especially Miles, are really realistic and feel more genuine to our emotions.
The journey of characters like Miles and Tate, including their struggles and growth, is seen as a strong aspect of the novel. The strength you get after struggles – isn’t it a great lesson for character development? The story conveys a positive message about overcoming a painful past, learning to love again, and not letting past traumas spoil your future. It encourages readers to focus on the beautiful moments in life and not to lose hope of hurtful experiences.
The presence of impactful quotes in the book expresses meaningful life lessons. The book’s ability to awaken the reader’s emotions – from tears to laughter, love to hate, and, of course, the physical boost you feel is a great deal.
The only thing that might be more efficient is Tate’s character. She is treated as a woman should be. It is clear that she has feelings, but Miles keeps on refusing her and limits her to a body-to-body relationship. There’s concern about the book’s themes being potentially harmful to a teenage audience, as it might perpetuate the idea that women should accept toxic relationships.
Overall, the story, the characters, the plot twists; everything is just great and worth reading. Giving the book 4.5/5 – it is much more likely to be 5/5, but I think it’s okay with 4.5.
Author’s Inspiration for “Ugly love”:
In Colleen Hoover’s interview with Goodreads, she has explained her startup idea of “Ugly Love”. She says that the story is inspired by a band “Airborne Toxin Event”. While she was listening to their music, Hoover got the idea of Miles’s character and started working on that. Miles’s middle name is Mikel which is a singer’s name. The short name of the band was TATE, which became the main girl’s name. She cleared that she has not mentioned the band in the book.
What a nice character pickup she did.
Best Quotes:
Here’s my favorite part. These are the best picks, all loved by me and my friends:
“God gives us the ugliness, so we don’t take the beautiful things in life for granted.”
“When life gives you lemons, make sure you know whose eyes you need to squeeze them in.”
“Love isn’t always pretty. Sometimes you spend all your time hoping it’ll eventually be something different. Something better. Then, before you know it, you’re back to square one, and you lost your heart somewhere along the way.”
This one is my favorite, too many feelings packed in it:
“If I were capable of loving someone . . . it would be you.”
