Genre:

This novel is a genre mashup that will keep you on the edge. It mainly falls beneath psychological thriller, where tension, manipulation, and the characters’ internal efforts are central. But it also includes details of a domestic thriller, putting the simmering suspense and risk within the typical location of a high school.

Age rating:

This novel has no legal age rating but is best for adult audiences. The book attacks sensitive themes like improper connections between teachers and students, which can be problematic for more youthful readers.

Writing style:

Freida McFadden threads a suspenseful web in “The Teacher” through her writing style. The story develops quickly, full of twists, manipulation, and the characters’ inner rage. Using alternating views between Addie and Eve, she makes irresponsible narrators, leaving us questioning who’s speaking the truth.

Section-by-Section Summary:

Part I follows the story of Addie, a junior at Caseham High School, who is believed to have played a role in the dismissal of her teacher, Arthur Tuttle, due to their alleged inappropriate relationship. At school, she faces isolation and neglect from her once close friend, Hudson. She also becomes a target of bullying from Kenize, Hudson’s attractive and popular new girlfriend. It is later revealed that Addie and Hudson’s friendship came to an end after a tragic incident where Addie’s abusive and alcoholic father died during a physical altercation, which resulted in him falling down the stairs.

At Caseham, there are two teachers, Eve and Nate, who happen to be married. Despite being very attractive, Nate is not very affectionate towards Eve and often rejects her efforts to add more romance to their relationship. On the other hand, Eve has a habit of buying expensive high heels, which Nate does not approve of.

The Teacher

This causes Eve to become envious and frustrated, leading to her having an affair with a shoe salesman named Jay for the past four months. Nate, who loves poetry, is interested in another teacher, Addie, after reading one of her poems. This leads to an affair between Nate and Addie, and ultimately, Addie loses her virginity to him. Nate even writes a poem for Addie. However, it is revealed that a previous incident with Mr. Tuttle was a mere misunderstanding.

Addie had gone to his house for support while he was tutoring her, but she was seen peeking through the bushes while Mr. Tuttle and his wife were having dinner. This resulted in Mr. Tuttle losing his job due to the bad optics of the situation. As Addie becomes more attached to Nate, Eve catches them kissing and demands a divorce, asking Nate to end his affair with Addie.

When Addie tries to convince Eve of their love, she becomes hysterical and accidentally hits Eve with a frying pan. In a panic, Addie calls Nate for help, but when they find out that Eve is still alive, Nate ends up killing her by strangling her to death to protect their secret. When Addie asks about the red marks on Eve’s neck, Nate avoids the question.

In the second part of the story, Nate and Addie work together to dig a grave. However, Nate abandons Addie and decides to bury the body on his own. Addie then contacts Hudson to come and pick her up. The following day, Nate reports to the authorities that his wife is missing and implies that Addie may have played a role in her disappearance. Initially, the police believe Nate’s story, but they also suggest to Addie that he may be trying to shift the blame onto her.

Kenzie discloses to Addie that she saw her with a poem given to her by Nate. Kenzie recognizes the poem because it is the same one that he had given to her when she was 14, and they were involved in a sexual relationship. As a result, Addie and Kenzie decide to go to the police to reveal the truth.

In Part III, it’s revealed that Eve is still alive and could dig her way out since Addie had merely wrapped her with leaves. Eve has been staying with Jay. Eve and Jay lure Nate back to the grave, hit him out, and bury him alive. It’s revealed that Eve was also an ex-student of Nate’s, whom he seduced many years ago when she was 15.

In the Epilogue, it is believed that Nate vanished following the stigma of being identified as a sexual predator. However, Eve returns and explains that she needed some time away. It is then uncovered that the person Eve referred to as “Jay” was Hudson, short for Jankowski, his surname, but their relationship has ended. The novel concludes with Addie and Hudson clasping hands.

My review:

I’m one of those who reads a suspenseful thriller like this one. And I’m already trying; my brain is turning. My brain is wandering and trying to solve whatever problem there is. But I was surprised to find out the ending. I don’t want to give too many spoilers, but I knew one part towards the end would happen because of Frida. It’s almost like she gave it away, but I knew that portion would happen. So, I’m going to give it a go. So, I’m going to give it a go.

It’s tough. And I love that Frida McFadden did that in this book, where you are unsure wondering if you should trust this character or that character or none of them. It’s all over the place in a good way, in a positive way. Now, my recommendation for this book is that I recommend this book to people who love to read thrillers, suspenseful thrillers, or mysterious books. And I would give this book a rating of nine out of 10.

Now, could you give it a nine out of 10? Because there was a part at the end where I’m like, Oh, I know this is going to happen because everything’s adding up. And it has to be equal to this. And it was. But at the very end, I was not expecting what went down. So, I will give this book a nine out of 10.
